Issue 17

Guest edited by Jack Delaney

This edition of Paper Visual Art Journal PVA 17 – focuses on fashion and its relationship to contemporary art. It gathers three new critical essays, an interview, and an archival text by a range of writers and artists, each of which explores the various ways that fashion impacts our daily lives.

Satisfactory definitions of fashion are difficult to come by – somehow, it feels both too diffuse and too intimate a concept to be summarised in just a few words. The pieces collected here approach the subject of fashion from a number of different perspectives, reflecting on its status as an industry, its association with celebrity, its ambiguous place within material culture, and its unruly relationship to time. Rounding out the issue is a trio of short autobiographical pieces focusing on teenage fashion and its intersections with various sub-cultures, written by three writers of different generations. This is accompanied by a selection of photographs provided by Garry O’Neill, an editor who has been working in this area for a number of years.

With contributions from Rosa Abbott, Darran Anderson, Liam Cagney, June Caldwell, Laurence Counihan, Lisa Godson, John Graham, Francis Halsall, Maija Makela, Joseph Noonan-Ganley, Rachel O’Dwyer, Eileen O’Faolain, Garry O’Neill, and Philippa Snow.
